The Why Behind the Dine

Over the past several years, spending on groceries has been essentially flat, while spending on food prepared outside the home has grown dramatically, +22% according to Acosta’s recent study, The Why Behind the Dine.  This trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, so understanding these trends, and the underlying drivers, is important to grocers for several reasons:

  • Long term grocery growth depends on understanding and satisfying the needs of the Millennials, families with kids and higher income households who are most likely to choose food-away-from-home options
  • Grocers can take part in the food-away-from-home movement with meal solutions and prepared foods in the store.  Doing so requires understanding and responding to your competition
  • Trends in off-premise dining are a reliable predictor of what shoppers will be looking to prepare at home using groceries purchased in your stores.  Get ahead of the curve by knowing what’s coming next.

Join Acosta Strategic Advisors Managing Director John Clevenger for an intriguing and Collaborative Whiteboard Session to dig deeper into the trends, opportunities, and ideas on this challenging topic.
